Retractable awnings aren't made to tolerate rain.  If your goal is to have shade when you need it, these awnings are wonderful.  However, if you want an awning that can be used in rain, you'll need a stationary frame awning.  The nature of the lateral arm design of these can't tolerate the weight of water.
